stress management in tertiary institution
Education is believed to be one of the major tools to liberate us from ignorance, and unwitting mental, psychological, and emotional contingencies. Otherwise, it has been observed that in a bid to acquire education, most tertiary institution students have become victims of what this should have done to them due to poor stress management. Stress has been defined as a negative emotional, cognitive, behavioral and psychological process that occurs as someone tries to adjust to deal with tensions and pressures. It is no news in tertiary institutions that stress has been associated with academics as ‘a mental distress with respect to some anticipated frustrations which result in academics failure or even unawareness of the possibility of that failure’.
The etiology and pathogenesis of stress is complex and multifactorial, and varies across environments. Among university students for instance, Perceived stress may take the form of academic stress with multiple triggering factors i.e. academics stressors such as:
Academic demands.ss
Lack of finances.
Poor time management.
Self-imposed stressors such as Dating, Partying etc.
Unconducive learning environments among others.
For instance, psychological stress is highly conversant among freshmen and female students, which leads to negative pattern of behavior, development of psychosomatic symptoms, and decreased academic performance.
The effects of poor stress management on students cannot be over-emphasized, nevertheless, appropriate measures and controls need to be considered and practiced. The following practices have been considered to be very effective in managing stress:
Circuit Breaker- Get your mind off the problem.
Take a deep breath under pressure to lessen stressors.
Eat a healthy, balanced diet.
Tell someone who cares or you trust.
Avoid smoking, alcohol and caffeine.
Take exercises.
